Discussion The story of Europes great civilizations begins on Crete around 1700 BC, with the highly sophisticated culture that grew up "around palace centers on Crete: the Minoans" (Hooker, 1996). We have no records that tell us their history or the stories they told: "All we have left are their palaces, their incredibly developed visual culture, and their records" (Hooker, 1996). Hooker says that the amount of records left by the Minoans is amazing, because their civilization was "oriented around trade and bureaucracy with little or no evidence of a military state," and such a civilization would require a lot of records keeping (Hooker, 1996). The Minoans built "perhaps the single most efficient bureaucracy in antiquity," but their unique culture "lasted only a few centuries" and when it disappears, attention shifts to the European mainland were the "military city-states on the mainland of Greece" are founded (Hooker, 1996). Thus, the Minoans predate the Greek civilization. The settlements that appeared on the mainland borrowed some of the elements from the Minoans, but these people were apparently not bureaucrats in the same degree as the older culture: they were a "war-like people oriented around a war-chief" and their culture was one of "battle and conquest" (Hooker, 1996). These people are the Mycenaeans; they are named after the "best-preserved of their cities," and their greatest accomplishment, Hooker says, is the destruction of Troy (Hooker, 1996). Shortly after the fall of Troy the Mycenaeans and the other Aegean civilizations entered a "Dark Age" during which the "Greeks stopped writing and, it seems, abandoned their cities" (Hooker, 1996).
