the interrelationship between gods, humans and nature, and the importance of stylised and formal ritual practices designed to maintain that worldview. As noted by OConnor (2002), this can be seen
exemplified in all forms of art and architecture during the period, since the gods were seen as playing a significant and integral role in all aspects of everyday life, and
especially with regard to the ceremonies surrounding death. The importance which was attached to royal
burials, and the way in which complex and mystical ceremonies accompanied the death of the pharaohs, have provided modern archaeologists with extensive evidence regarding the civilisation of the period, especially
with reference to the connection between theology and artistic forms and representations. The art of
the period clearly shows the way that social and cultural customs were derived from, and integrated with, the Egyptian view of the cosmos, and the extent to which theological and
philosophical doctrines were illustrated in both royal and domestic artistic forms. Mesoamerican civilisation, from
Mexico and other areas of central America, demonstrates a number of similarities with Egyptian culture: the main architectural form is the pyramid, their spiritual and religious cultural practices placed great
emphasis on the afterlife, and like the Egyptians, their written language was in hieroglyphic form.
