reports that God has said, over and over, "For three transgressions ... and for four, I will not revoke the punishment" (Amos, 1, 3). The punishments differ according to
who committed the transgressions, but the wrongs themselves seem very much the same. Damascus has "threshed Gilead"; Gaza "carried into exile a whole people"; Tyre did not remember "the
covenant of brotherhood"; Edom "because they have ripped up women with child in Gilead, that they might enlarge their border" (Amos, 1, 13). But he reserves his worst punishment
for Israel, "because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes-they that trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth,
and turn aside the way of the afflicted" (Amos, 2, 6). We also read "Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are in the mountain of Samaria,
who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their husbands, Bring, that we may drink!" (Amos, 4, 1). The common thread through all of these examples
is Gods displeasure with those who do not help the poor and needy, but who instead pursue the good life at the expense of others. Amoss words are somewhat different
from the other prophets of the Old Testament, and he has been singled out because of that (Stedman, 2003). The real message in the Book is that God is
