to their lot with that of Germany. The thesis can be presented that the personal experiences and backgrounds of Greeces king and his wife were as much at the
root of Greeces reluctance to enter the war as was any other factor. Despite her reluctance, Greece did eventually enter World War I. She did so
primarily because of a political obligation that stretched back to the end of the nineteenth century. In 1890, over two decades before the beginning of the Great War in
1914, Greece had entered into an agreement with France and Russia that the countries would defend one another against the threat the perceived as represented by the so-called Triple Alliance,
the alliance that had initially been formed between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy in 1882 and that had progressively expanded to include Serbia and Romania. The agreement that Greece
forged with France and Russia in 1890 became known as the Triple Entente, an alliance that Great Britain joined in 1907. Even when it appeared that World War I
was inevitable, however, Greece was very reluctant to enter the fray. She restrained from doing so even when the Allies offered her territorial gain in Turkey as a reward
for her assistance (Simpson, 2009). It might be contended that the reason behind Greeces reluctance to enter into World War I lie partially with Sophia, the wife
