a not-so-new literary world wherein it is the apes and not humans who have become the dominant species. In this story, however, the reader sees that one of the major
points being made by the author is that apes and humans are simply both animals in many ways. The following paper examines this point. Great Apes by Will
Self As noted, this book is about a world wherein apes are the dominant species and humans are not because they lack many skills possessed by the apes. The author
makes many points throughout the story about how humans perceive apes and apes perceive humans. For example, in one part of the book one character is illustrating how it is
impossible to know what goes on in the mind of an animal. Considering that the speaker is an ape, and the reader is a human being, one can clearly see
how the author is pointing out how ignorance dictates the belief in such realities, or non-realities. The character mentions veal farming, which is clearly a human act, and then notes
"the mental state of the animal was an unknowable thing" (Self, 1998; 48). In this one can see how the author has perhaps bridged the gap, not making this
only a story about humans and apes, but pointing out other animals as well which really pulls the reader into a position where they see that we are all animals
in one way or another. There is an arrogance about both humans and apes in relationship to this story, and clear evidence that neither is ultimately right.
