a film cannot get across the same feel or theme as a novel. Such is apparently the case with Graham Greenes novel "The Quiet American." The following paper examines and
summarizes a commentary written to the Times (which Times is unknown) back in 1957 as an answer and comment to a previous letter from Greene. The letter is written by
Christopher Hawtree. The letter was provided by the student and thus has not citation information. Case of the Quiet American Hawtree opens his letter by indicating that if
the changes made to the story "The Quiet American" are carried out as were presented in a previous correspondence then the film will greatly miss its intent, it marks, and
its message. He states that if these changes are made then "they will make only the more obvious the discrepancy between what the State Department would like the world to
believe and what in fact happen in Vietnam" Interestingly enough, this article was written when we had really not immersed ourselves in Vietnam, yet obviously people understood the tensions
and realities of the Vietnam struggle prior to the United States involvement. In this particular commentary he is clearly indicating that the truth that was written in Greenes work will
not exist on film and that it will likely just be another film that covers up the truth, that makes the capitalists look good perhaps. He states that, "Hollywoods version
will be a safe one- that of the triumphant emergence of the democratic forces in the young and independent state of Vietnam backed by the United States." His commentary then
