The first prerequisite for success is that the student carefully delineate their goals. Next the must carefully manage their time so that they can meet their goals. Finally,
the must constantly exercise quality control tactics in everything that they do. When entering graduate school it is critical that students realize that
those individuals who are clearer in their goals and aspirations and who take charge of their own destinies in life are more likely to succeed than those who are not
and do not. The student must therefore have very specific goals in mind if they are to optimize their success not just in their graduate program but in life
in general. It is not enough to set degree obtainment as the primary objective. Instead the student must look inside themselves to find out just what it is
that they need their degree for. They must also look at the specifics of the program they have signed up for and understand those specifics so that they can
use the program as leverage to obtain their ultimate goals. Peterson (1997) points out that one of the most common problems confronting graduate students is that they do not
understand how graduate schools work! There are many areas where clear goal identification can be an asset in graduate school.
