Urie Bronfenbrenners theory of human ecology has been an instrument blurring the lines between various disciplines focusing on human behavior. Bronfenbrenner, one of the founders of the Head Start
program designed to give at-risk children better beginnings, defined several levels of systems that directly affect child and adolescent development. This paper discusses those systems and how they have
affected the choice of one individual to pursue a masters degree. Introduction Graduate school is a more common destination for graduates of four-year
programs today compared to the past. In many respects college has become the "new high school" in that a college degree is considered to constitute a minimum standard in
many disciplines. If that is the case, then by the same token graduate school can be regarded as nearly obligatory for some disciplines. Certainly some make the decision
to earn a masters degree for this reason; others seek a graduate degree only for personal satisfaction. It would seem that the individuals
general attitude toward education depends in large part on the circumstances of the individuals development. The student writing on this topic should consider the likelihood that this is the
position the late developmental psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner would take. Bronfenbrenners Human Ecology Lang (2005) writes, "Before Bronfenbrenner, child psychologists studied children, sociologists focused
on families, anthropologists considered culture, economists the economic framework of the times" (p. 24). Bronfenbrenners theory of human ecology holds that everything in a childs environment affects the development
