This is most notable in this film through the character of Sammy, a young, single mother who is at heart lost and broken. There are a variety of scenes that provide evidence of grace, based upon the eight moments of grace. The idea of grace is an overriding theme in this film, resurrecting Christian ideology in a modern format. The notion of grace within Catholicism first emerged with Martin Luther, who substantiated the notion that man was unable to act fully independently. According to Luthers theory, "mans free will was so impaired by original sin that like a horse it could perform good or bad acts only as "it was ridden either by God or the devil" (Controversies on Grace, 2004). And yet, grace is not something bestowed by God in a grand gesture but rather subtle opportunities offered to individuals that provide the means for gradual awakening (Sanctifying Grace, 2004). In this way, You Can Count on Me provides revelation into exactly this concept of grace. The director is careful not to produce overt scenes that transcend the traditional notions of grace, but rather presents a series of interactions from which Sammy can learn about her self and her world - thus prompting personal growth. One of the first instance in this film of momentary grace is when her brother Terry comes into town. She is thrilled to see him.
