himself felt when faced with particular subjects. In "Execution of the Third of May" we have a painting that demonstrates "mans inhumanity to man, and Goyas abhorrence of it" (Gray,
2004). The following paper analyzes this particular painting. Execution of the Third of May "Francisco Goyas (1746-1826) Execution of the Rebels,(Executions of the Third of May, 1808), painted
in 1814-1815, proves that the subject of a painting may be ugly and cruel, but the picture can be a great work of art if it is painted by a
genius, and the aesthetics and content are significant" (Gray, 2004). In terms of the subject matter we note that it involves the revenge of Napoleans troops. The revenge is being
played out towards the Spaniards and they are in front of a firing squad in the dark of night. "The subject of the painting is the horror of the execution"
(Gray, 2004). In this particular painting we have four very distinct groupings of individuals. There are those that are dead, those that are going to be shot, those waiting
to be next in line for killing and then the men with the guns and uniforms. The painting is incredibly dark save for one bright, almost too bright spot. That
spot is the white shirt of the man who is going to be shot at any given moment. His arms are up and there is a brilliance about him because
he is bathed in a white shirt that seems incredibly clean. This is perhaps symbolic of his innocence and his life in the face of these men with guns who
