Americans, by and large, are completely disillusioned with politicians and government officials, Britons are only moderately disillusioned. The second important factor is that the British people tend to take more liberal positions on both social and moral issues, which has a direct effect on the government and the policies that are adopted. Many Americans might be surprised to learn that capital punishment was eliminated in Britain in 1965, both homosexuality and abortion have been legal since 1967 and all handguns have been illegal since 1998. Handguns were made illegal after a shooting at a school. Americans tend to do a lot of moaning and groaning about personal responsibility and social problems and place blame on many different sources when tragic things happen, like shootings at schools but they take no definitive actions. By contrast, Britons place the blame exactly where it belongs, on the availability of guns and they then tighten the controls. The American political system has two major parties. Republicans and Democrats, but it is rather hard to tell them apart anymore. Once, there were clear priorities of each party and clear positions but that has not been true for many years. There are any number of other political parties, such as the Libertarian, the Green Party, the Reform Party and others but candidates from these parties seldom win any election at any governmental level. Seldom but not never. For instance, Jerry Ventura, a wrestler, ran on the Reform Party ticket and won the governorship of Minnesota in 1998. The party system causes problems particularly when the United States Congress is controlled by one party and the President of the United States belongs to the other party.
