of time. THE GOVERNMENT OF BRAZIL It was in 1964 that the populist movement in Brazil was supported as well as controlled by the left and was ready
to take over. The military intervened at the time, and ousted President Joao Goulart as well as the political forces. This move was hoped to turn the government
over to the civilian politicians who represented the interests of their people, but instead the military ruled, settling in comfortably as if for a lengthy stay. Brazil has
had what many would term "an interesting and varied government throughout the years, going from military rule to a subsequent transition to civilian rule" (Abbott, 2000, PG). As South
Americas largest nation, Brazil has always speculated on what the future holds. The restoration of civilian rule was a long-deserved one after Brazils struggle against dictatorship for so long.
Until 1964 all of the prior military interventions in Brazilian politics had been very quick. The military not only installed a civilian leadership but also presented
a candidate in elections that were customary at that time. The 1964 Revolution came with a promise to act likewise. The understanding in this was that it was
in effect defending democracy from the authoritarian rule of President Goulart. Finally, after twenty years of military rule, Brazilians got their first civilian president. Although the Social
