The Gothic genre of fiction can be considered as forming part of the Romantic movement which covered a forty-year period
at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century. Romanticism valued innovation rather than the traditional forms which had preceded it, and spontaneity. It was characterised
by a freedom of thought and expression which often delineated the ideas and emotions of the writer himself, and frequently demonstrated an idealistic perspective towards nature. There was also a
sense that the era held a multitude of new possibilities for human beings to explore, and therefore there was a strong focus on discovery and new beginnings.
Gothic fiction, although classified as a part of the Romantic movement, evinced something of the dark
side of human nature and is seen by some commentators as the predecessor to modern mystery novels or, in some cases, science fiction. There are a number of features which
are generally seen as common to the Gothic novel, including a medieval or pseudo-medieval setting, a solitary protagonist and a series of mysterious or supernatural events through which the narrative
