actually being considered gothic novels. The Italian by Ann Radcliffe is a novel that is clearly gothic, and is considered by many to be one of the first truly gothic
novels. Another novel that is powerfully gothic is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Persuasion, however, by Jane Austen is not normally considered a gothic novel, although her Northanger Abbey is considered
to be as such. The following paper examines these three novels, separately, as they offer up gothic themes. Gothic Elements in Literary Works: The Italian In this story
there is the very obvious damsel in distress sort of theme. The woman Ellena is refused the right to love a man she desires to the extent that she is
kidnapped and hidden way in a place where she cannot be found. "She perceived that this chamber was within a small turret, projecting from an angle of the convent over
the walls, and suspended, as in air, above the vast precipices of granite, that formed part of the mountain" (Radcliffe 228). This is an ominous setting that offers up incredible
imagery that speaks of the gothic genre. It is almost unrealistic or surreal and thus is very dark and oppressive. The man who was responsible for putting her there
is actually a monk, Shedoni, but he is a man who had a presence that possessed the "gloomy pride of a disappointed one" (Radcliffe 78). He actually desires to murder
Ellena but then finds out that she may, in fact, be his daughter, which further adds to the theme of gothic in presenting the reader with a very complex turn
of events that is not pleasant or happy. He discovers that she is not his daughter, but is a relative. But, the reader cares little for his connection to her
