The following paper examines the influence of Gothic cathedrals as seen in more modern art movements, beginning with the Arts and Crafts movement. Gothic Cathedrals In understanding what Gothic architecture is all about, as it relates to Gothic cathedrals and the influence of that style, one must first understand that Gothic is something still being defined, even today. One author notes the following: "The style ceased...but the name remained, and when, early in the nineteenth century, the beginnings of a new epoch brought new apologists, the old title was taken over as the only one available, and since then constant efforts have been made to define it more exactly, to give it a new significance, or to substitute in its place a term more expressive of the idea to be conveyed" (Catholic Encyclopedia, 2006). It was a form of architecture that originally diverged from the classic Greek and Roman architecture in a very powerful way. It became incredibly ornate, dark, religious, organic, and embodied many religious and pagan elements. As such it clearly influenced many areas of architecture. One of the most powerful elements of the style of the gothic cathedrals, as seen in the Arts and Crafts movement, is that which relates to stained glass. Gothic cathedrals possessed some of the most wondrous art pieces in the medium of stained glass. In terms of the development of this art form one author notes that with the development of flying buttresses the walls of cathedrals became thinner, and more conducive to various designs (Hall; Kraegel, 1999).
