This type of architecture followed the early medieval or Romanesque style and was eventually succeeded by the Renaissance, which originated in Italy in the fifteenth century. However, Gothic architecture did not abruptly disappear. Stylistic changes are always gradual. Throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries there was frequent merging of the new Renaissance with old Gothic forms (Swaan, 1977). In fact, the Gothic architectural style continued throughout the Renaissance era in certain selected areas of Europe. The purpose of this paper is to examine and describe the Gothic movement with respect to cathedral development. An outline of Gothic architecture in almost any European country must begin with a survey of churches, since they were the dominant type of Gothic building in size and importance. Just as monasteries played the dominant role in the preceding Romanesque period, so cathedrals were dominant in the Gothic period (Branner, 1989; Hearn, 1994). Towards this end, the movement has been divided into categories pertinent to major centuries of change. Although many European cities experienced similar developments during the time period in question, France is considered to be a major representative example and therefore more widely reviewed. Following subsections discuss the changes in cathedral construction and development which came about during the identified time period. The review includes an examination of main cathedrals during that specified century and a description of how they incorporated the new structural developments that were unique to their particular sub-era.
