a list of the events that are most similar in the two Gospels. The essay then moves into the differences between the two. There are many differences, some substantive and
others that are simply presented with more detail in one or the other Gospel. For instance, Jesus telling His mother that the disciple there was her son and telling the
disciple that this was his mother is reported only in John. There is a significant difference also in the way the two Gospels present an image of Pilate.
John seems to want to reduce Pilates degree of blame in the crucifixion of Jesus. The writer also includes comments regarding the differences and the possible motivation of each author
in their presentations. The Gospels of Mark and John Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the synoptic Gospels because they are so much alike. In fact, there are
few substantive differences between and among them. The Gospel according to John, however, differs significantly in the accounts of certain events. It is believed that Johns Gospel was written much
later than the other three and this could be one reason for the differences. Other theories suggest that Marks Gospel and a lost document were used as a reference point
