Jesus Christ and this gospel is considered to be part of the "Gnostic" tradition. This term, which means "possessing intellectual or spiritual knowledge" derives from "gnosis," which means the "Intuitive
apprehension of spiritual truths." As this suggests the sayings of the Gospel of Thomas are meant to be self-evident in their meaning. They are offered with no readily apparent order
or plan of composition. However, they can be divided into four basic categories: proverbs, prophecies, parables and rules for the community. The gospel begins with a statement of authorship,
attributing the words to Jesus and the writing to Didymos Judas Thomas. The first saying indicates that Jesus said that those who understand the meaning of his words "will not
taste death." This proverb offers a promise of salvation. In the next several sayings, Jesus offers examples, guidance, as to how his words will leads the listener to salvation through
the knowledge that his proverbs offer. Prophecies are also included in the sayings. For instance, saying 113 indicates that the disciples asked Jesus about when the Kingdom of God
would occur and Jesus replied that this would not happen when they expect it. He said, "It will not come by expectation. They will not say Look here, or, Look
there, but the Kingdom of the Father is spread out on the earth and men do not see it." A short parable occurs early in Thomass Gospel, as Jesus
warns his disciples that they will be told that the birds will lead them to heaven, suggesting that heaven lies in the sky. Jesus says, however, that heaven does not
have an earthly location, but exists both "within you and outside you," which means that they will know heaven by knowing themselves as "sons of the living Father." This parable
