Europe. Like so many technology companies, Google was also started in a garage by two Stanford grad students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, in September 1998 (Google, 2009). Page
and Brin had figured out a formula for ranking content by relevancy regarding the search words (Schein, 2009). They initially set up the search engine on Stanford servers but the
university decided it was taking up too much of the universitys bandwidth (Google, 2009). By December, they were receiving rave reviews from PC Magazine. On August 18, 2004, Google went
public with an IPO but each of the two founders continue to hold a 30 percent share in the company (Google, 2009). By then, they had already forged partnerships with
numerous companies, including rivals Yahoo! and AOL. They had also released numerous applications and have continued to do so, including portals and other partnerships (Google, 2009). Portals include Webmail
(gmail), photo sharing, instant messaging and blogging (Schein, 2009). Google maps are very popular as are their Google Scholar, Google Books and Google images. The industries in which Google
Inc compete are: Media, Internet Search & Navigation Services; Business Services, Advertising & Marketing, and Computer Software, Content & Document Management Software in that order (Schein, 2009). Internet Search &
