novel was written in the 1800s, it is still considered excellent literature by todays standards and has much to teach in terms of human nature. Essentially, the book is
about a split personality - one of which is good and one of which is evil. The ensuing story unfolds the battle which takes place between the two.
The author Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850 in Edinburgh and died in 1894 (Haldipur). He went on to
the university and studied law, even though he never ended up practicing law (Haldipur). He is know to have always had a passion for writing and pursued it with
vigor upon his release from the university (Haldipur). Stevenson is also the author of Treasure Island (Winchester, 50). In 1876 Stevenson
met a woman named Fanny, and settled with her in California (Haldipur). She impacted his life greatly and much of his relationship with her is reflected in his writing
(Haldipur). Legend has it that Stevenson was inspired to write Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde after having a dream in which a man was split into two and developed
two different personalities (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). It has been said that the "first version of Robert Louis Stevensons Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was
written in three days and then, following criticism from his wife, burnt by the author" (Dury, 490). It is said then, that the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
