What is a good leader? It is a question that has been asked even before Machiavellis time, and one that is pertinent today. People often speak of politicians as either
good or bad leaders. Some are thought to be self-serving, while others are believed to be general servants who work for the public good. There are many types of leaders
and while some are charismatic and can gain the support of the people quite easily, they are not always effective. For example, while Bill Clinton was a charismatic leader, many
contend he did little in terms of changing things for the United States. Good leadership is necessary for a country to flourish ("The damage," 2000). On the other hand, one
may call Hitler a charismatic leader because he was able to capture the will of the people and prod them into a direction they would never have gone. Jim Jones
and Charles Manson, as well as other "religious" leaders had effectively brainwashed groups of people. They were effective leaders in that they got their way, but they were not good
leaders. They relied on the will of the people and the easy way that one can manipulate the populous rather than relying on good leadership qualities. A good leader is
someone who can motivate and make positive change in society or within the framework of an organizations. A good leader is also someone who perseveres ("Strategic," 2003). Both good and
effective leaders need to posses similar traits in order to prompt large changes. Most agree that the definition of leadership is illusive because there are many different definitions. Although there
are a variety of ways to define the concept, two which seem to be the best have come from Harvard Professor Rosabeth Ross Kanter and the Wharton Schools
