workplaces are tremendously diverse. All workplaces that have more than one employee, however, have some level of management. American workplace, and indeed the world workplace in general,
has undergone tremendous changes in just a relative short period of time. A common element in all of this change is the growing realization by managers around the world
that principles of business management cover a wide range of management concerns in addition to such issues as profit maximization. Numerous traits interplay to determine whether that management will
be effective or ineffective. Of those traits, however, good communication skills could be considered the most important trait a manager could have.
In "The New American Workplace: Transforming Work Systems in the United States" Applebaum and Batt review one case study after another which reveals, however, that far too frequently
tension results when trying to balance human resources with workplace goals. Good communication skills are paramount to overcoming this tension and optimizing workplace production. The result is increased
company profitability and a better address of organizational goals. To be most effective good managers must inspire dialogue between management and employees. Issacs (1999) emphasizes that the term
"dialogue" stems from the Greek and denotes: "a flow of meaning. The essence of
dialogue is an inquiry that surfaces ideas, perceptions and understanding that people do not already have"
