Zwingli and the Swiss Reformation Zwinglis Pilgrimage Nationalism and humanism both contributed to the Lutheran reformation and these were also factors in Swiss reformation, which was led by Ulrich Zwingli.1
Gonzalez begins this chapter by summarizing Zwinglis biography, relating that his uncle, from whom Zwingli learned his first letters, had studied at Basel and Bern, which were locations in which
humanism was thriving.2 He received a Master of Arts degree in 1506 and became a priest for the village of Glarus, but continued with humanistic study, becoming proficient in Greek,
which extraordinary for a parish priest during this era.3 Accompanying Swiss mercenary soldiers in 1512 and 1515, Zwingli personally witnessed the ramifications of both victory, which was looting, and defeat
and this convinced him that mercenary service was destroying the moral fabric of Swiss society.4 He became famous for preaching against the idea that actions, such as going on a
pilgrimage, could result in salvation; and, by 1518, when he became a priest in Zurich, he had formulated many of the same conclusions as Luther.5 Gonzalez makes it clear that,
rather than being caused by Luthers reformation, the Swiss reformation paralleled the reformation in Germany.6 The Break with Rome Gonzalez relates the various ways in which Zwinglis preaching went
