Call for Reformation Justo L. Gonzalez begins chapter 1 of his text on Christian history, The Reformation to the Present Day, with a quote made by Isabella of Castile on
November 20, 1500, which indicates the urgent need for church reformation that was evident at that time. The Great Schism, during which there had been two, and sometimes three, popes
competing with each other, had weakened and corrupted the papacy; and, after the schism was healed, Renaissance popes seemed more intent on excelling the glories of ancient Rome than on
the message of the gospels.1 Furthermore, the conciliar movement also exhibited corruption as bishops on these councils often benefitted from corrupt practices, such as the "buying and selling [of] ecclesiastical
positions."2 This culture of corruption affected behavior throughout the church hierarchy, with priests, and even popes, flaunting their illegitimate children.3 Pope Julius II convoked the Fifth Lateran Council, presumably for
the purposes of reformation, but it accomplished little beyond imposing taxation to raise funds for the next crusade. In addition to moral reformation, many Christians felt that the Church
had strayed in regards to its teachings. Due to scholars from the East flooding Western Europe after the falls of Constantinople and the manuscripts that they brought with them, it
