Gonzalez begins this chapter by explaining that the writings of the apologists were all in response to specific topics, such as issues dealing with persecution; however, the writing of the church teachers of the second century, which is the focus of this chapter, was in response to Marcionism and Gnosticism.i Irenaeus of Lyons Gonzalez begins with Irenaeuss biography, indicating that he was born around 130 A.D., was a disciple of Polycarp, and elected bishop of the city of Lyons.ii Gonzalez stresses that Irenaeus was primarily a pastor. Therefore his writing is focused primarily on educating his congregation and this makes his writing particularly instructive to contemporary readers and historians because it provides an excellent guide to understanding the precepts and theology of the second century.iii Gonzalez lists his surviving works and indicates their main purpose, which was for instruction and also to refute heresy. Gonzalez then gives an overview of the basic principles that defined Irenaeuss theology, which the reader can assume is indicative of second century theology in general.
