A New Jewish Sect Chapter 5, "First Conflicts with the State," begins by pointing out that early Christianity had a violent beginning.i The first section expands on a point that Gonzalez made earlier in the text, which is that early Christians did not perceive themselves as following a new religion, but rather they understood themselves as Jews who acknowledged the arrival of the Messiah. Therefore, their message did not include abandoning the customs and practices of Jewish law. Similarly, the Christian message to Gentiles was not to conceptualized in terms of accepting a new religion, but rather as inclusion in the promises made by God to Abraham and his descendent.ii As this indicates, early Christians did not see their faith in Christ as a new religion. Gonzalez points out that, rather than viewing Christianity as a new religion, a more accurate designation would be to identify it as a "heretical sect within Judaism."iii This perspective, when considered in the light of Hebrew history, offers insight into why Jews felt threatened by Christians and consequently persecuted them.
