In chapter 3 of his text The Story of Christianity, Volume 1: The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation. Justin Gonzalez discusses "The Church in Jerusalem." Unity and Diversity This section of the chapter describes the nature of the early church and how it is portrayed in Acts. While there is diversity in the early church, Gonzales clarifies that this was not between Gentile and Jewish Christians, but rather between two factions within the Jewish community, which are referred to in Acts as "Hebrew," that is, Jewish Christians who maintained the customs of the Jewish faith, and "Hellenists," which are identified as people of Jewish ancestry who were open to Hellenistic influences.i The section goes on to describe how the Apostles handled this tension and the differences in persecution patterns that were directed toward these two groups, which indicates that the Hellenists were persecuted more extensively than the Hebrews.
