Bibliography 19 Introduction Effective leadership continues to be a much-discussed topic and numerous authors have different ideas on the issue. in fact, if one Googles the phase effective leadership, more than half-a-million documents will be presented. There is no shortage of opinions and arguments identifying one or more leadership models or styles as being the most effective. Any leader with any amount of insight knows that a single leadership model that is successful in one setting with one group of employees may not be successful in a different setting with a different group of people. Leaders must be versed and capable of using more than one leadership style. For example, as positive as consensus decision may be insofar as it involved employees, it is not the most effective for all decisions. There are even more lists of traits and characteristics of the successful and effective leader. What readers do not usually understand is that these lists are accumulated. One person could not possibly posses and demonstrate all of the dozens of characteristics and traits associated with effective leadership. One of the theories from the mid-1990s that is still getting a lot of press is Golemans introduction of emotional intelligence as a requirement for effective leadership. Goleman was not the first author or theorist to propose that personal interactions and social interactions were essential in business and managers and leaders needed to have excellent personal interaction skills.
