what. By identifying and examining the answers to these questions the event, may be better understood for a planning or assessment perspective. Examining the Melbourne International Comedy Festival these
five ws can be examined. The first w is why, this looks at the desired outcome of the event, what the event should achieve (Yeoman and Robertson, 2003). The stated
purpose of the festival is "discover, develop and showcase great talent for the entertainment and inspiration of a broad based audience" (MICF, 2011). This has been a major aim since
the festival was started 25 years ago by Barry Humphries and Peter Cook (MICF, 2011). However, this s not the only why, it is also a commercial venture, in order
to achieve the initial goal the festival needs to create revenues, a major motivator for cities to hold these events is to attract tourist, domestic and international and benefit the
local economy (Molloy, 2002). The benefits may be short term during the festival as well as support long term tourism with increased
positive exposure for the city from a major event (Preuss, 2004). Likewise, the artists appearing will also be looking for longer term benefits, increasing their fame or notoriety and potential
bookings as well as achieving short term bookings. Who looks at who is involved, both as the suppliers and organizers as well as the users or consumers of the event.
