financed initially through private donations and contributions. That meant as the years passed, the collection of hardcover books became worn, and many pages dog-eared. But the community was
not about to allow this sanctuary, which had offered readers a welcome respite from lifes harsh realities since the Great Depression, to fall into disrepair. Appealing to government officials,
funding was approved to give this local treasure a much-needed expansion and makeover. After closing for several months to complete extensive renovations, the library was finally ready to reassume
its important place in the community. Upon walking through its welcoming door, it was like being reunited with an old friend. The smell of fresh paint greeted me immediately
as I became reacquainted with the place where I spent so many happy times during my childhood. Our mother would drop my brother and I off at the library
on Saturday mornings, and for several hours we would immerse ourselves in tales of adventures in distant places. Now, however, I was temporarily at a loss because the library
looked so different. To the left of a large entryway was a huge multimedia center with seemingly endless shelves of music CDs, film and television show DVDs, and an
exhaustive collection of audio books. Walking past them all, attempting to focus on the images and titles competing for my attention at once was almost dizzying. Happily, there
was a reading table nearby where I could sit down, regain my bearings, and collect my thoughts. There was a lot to process - my old friend had changed quite
