of the character of Dahl. The following paper is written in first person and pretends to be written from the perspective of Dahl, a man who is adventurous, compassionate and
determined. Going Solo by Roald Dahl While I must insist that I am a humble man who feels that others are just as worthy as I am, I
must also be realistic when examining myself. When I do I find that I am very much a man who loves adventure. When I was a bit younger I found
myself working for the Shell Oil Company in Africa, far from my home. It was a wondrously dangerous and exciting place and I loved the people I came to know
there. Each day was very exciting it seemed. For example, there were a few times when my life, and the life of others, was threatened by the infamous mamba, a
very poisonous snake. "Oh those snakes! How I hated them! They were the only fearful thing about Tanganyika" (Dahl 41). Later, after Africa, I spent quite a bit of time
flying in WWII and I must say that was a great adventure, although frightening and dangerous too. I am also, I believe,
a very compassionate man. While humble I must illustrate a moment in my time in Africa to illustrate this point. I had a "boy" who was actually a young man
who essentially acted as my servant in many ways. Well one day this boy, Mdisho, took it upon himself to go and kill a man he felt, and rightly so,
