enlightened, although Faust presumes himself to be enlightened. In Francis Bacons The New Atlantis one can read many different perspectives, and arrive at a variety of conclusions as to what
exactly Bacon was arguing. But, amidst the possibilities lies the existence of enlightened absolutism, or a version of such a state of being. The following paper examines the notion of
enlightened absolutism within the work of Goethe and Bacon. Goethes Faust and Bacons The New Atlantis Enlightened absolutism is a condition
wherein a ruler holds a great deal of power over a society but that ruler is considered enlightened, doing whatever is best for the people, and immersing himself equally in
the rules and obligations of a society. It offers a ruler who is flexible and open minded, ruling over a free society, and focusing on things like the advancement of
art and science and religious toleration. When looking at Goethes work and questioning what his opinion of enlightened absolutism is one can

fits of selfish obsession, "Accursed ringing! Wounding me/ With shame: a treacherous blow:/ My realms laid out there, endlessly,/ But, at my back, this vexes so,/ Proclaiming, with its jealous
sound:/ My great estate is less than fine" (Goethe11151-56). He complains that things are not his way and he presumes to have the identity or the nature of a great
ruler as well as one who is ultimately enlightened and brilliant. He is essentially the epitome of what could be considered to be the opposite of an enlightened absolute ruler.
