has become a literary archetype. The novel takes the form of a series of letters from Werther to his friend Wilhelm, and recounts his experiences in a small German town,
where he finds the inhabitants absolutely charming. The first letter is dated "May 10" and then half-way through the book there is a letter dated "January 8, 1772," so we
know that the letters begin in 1771. The last of the letters is dated "December 6"; the year is 1772; after that, the "editor" takes over and continues the narrative,
until the last few of Werthers letters are revealed. The beginning of the book introduces the reader to a young man who is bright, observant and seemingly much in love
with life. He is living in a small town and much to his surprised, finds that he likes the people and their simple life. Goethes description of a place where
Werther goes to be alone is stunning, and indicates that the young man is very much at peace: "When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the
meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the
tall grass by the trickling stream" (Goethe). Even if we didnt know that Werther was an artist, his language and powers of observation would tell us that. His description of
the natural world is charming and its clear that he enjoys nature. But then things start to go wrong. At first Werther writes almost daily, then there is a gap
of a little over two weeks, from May 30 to June 16, and when Werther writes again, its to tell Wilhelm that he has fallen in love. He describes his
