Essay / Research Paper Abstract

An 8 page analysis of historian Godfrey Hodgson's study of American culture, America in Our Time. In this book, Hodgson argues that the period from the inauguration of JFK in 1960 through the second inauguration of Richard Nixon constitutes an era that was so radically different from what preceded it and followed it that it constitutes a specific 'age,' in and of itself. His arguments are most persuasive and the writer demonstrates that Hodgson carries off this premise extremely well. No additional sources cited.

Hodgson begins his analysis by discussing the impact that the assassination had on the country. In other words, he shows why this time qualifies as the beginning of a new era. He describes the mindset of the country, pointing out how Kennedy seemed to epitomize the American Dream. "A great many Americans had come up in the world by the beginning of the 1960s...Many were not quite sure how the good life should be lived; the Kennedys seemed to know" (Hodgson 5). JFKs handling of the presidency reflected the general mood of the nation, which saw the ...
