Goal setting can be beneficial for successful emergency management. The concept behind goal setting is that in order to enhance a persons work, specific goals should be put in place. The more difficult the goal is to obtain, the harder a person works (Campbell & Furrer, 1995). While goal setting is primarily used in academic and athletic situations, it can easily be applied to emergency management. Goals are used already in emergency management. In many cases, those involved in emergency management hold lives in their hands, so its impossible to see their goals as anything but difficult. In goal setting, each person in the group has a common goal. This is very easy to apply to emergency management since everyone involved wants to prevent disaster and fix it as soon as possible when it does hit. The primary goal of emergency management is to restore everything to normal as soon as possible. To start, productive emergency management should be able to prevent a disaster before it has a chance to occur. This isnt always possible as cases of natural disaster (e.g. Hurricane Katrina) are impossible to stop, but man-made disasters (e.g. September 11, 2001, and BP oil spill) can be prevented. In cases where the disaster is unavoidable, the primary goal is to prevent as many losses as possible (Ozceylan & Coskun, 2008). Emergency management requires incredible organizational skills.
