it. Goal Statement While visiting my parents in 2008, I bumped into an old friend who had enlisted in the Army right out of high school. He served
three tours of duty and came home a decorated veteran with a severe case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a lost limb. I bought him a cup of
coffee and he shared with me his experiences in Iraq, expressing the brutality, the horrors and the humanity he experienced while abroad and the conflicts when he returned home.
He spoke of his shattered family, depression and personal loss. Though I felt compassion for him, I also recognized that there were a number of ways that I could
help. I had worked with veterans in the past in vocational rehabilitation programming and saw some common issues that he shared with other veterans. At the time, I
already had a degree in vocational rehabilitation, but my gut response to his experiences helped me realize a more specific career path. I am pursing my graduate degree in
Human Development and Family Studies so that I can marry my vocational rehabilitation skills with family counseling to work with veterans and their families. Contribution Statement When my
younger brother, John, decided to go to college after two years of working after high school graduation, he attributed his decision to modest successes that I had made after graduating
from an undergraduate program. He not only saw that I had developed career strategies, but that I had a level of drive towards career advancement that he found admirable.
John told me that his decision to go to college was a direct result of my influence and the approach that I took to self-advancement.
