a place that does not seem to exist, yet surely does within the deeper recesses of many individuals. It is a deep and entertaining story on many different levels. The
following paper examines some of these different levels, perspectives, or elements. The paper analyzes elements such as different sides to a story, the voices of the story, the setting, and
elements of myth and legend. Sides to the Story The student requesting this paper notes that Cocoa, near the end of
the story, tells George, "There are just too many sides to the whole story." This is essentially told to a man who is now dead in a time that has
not yet come. This is just the sort of thing that this novel is based on in relationship to the fact that time almost means nothing in the world of
these people, on this island. This presents the reader with a sense of the mythical and legendary and fantasy for the place is timeless, as are it inhabitants. And Cocoa
comes from this place so it is only natural that, by the end of the book, she would have come to terms with who she is, and how that being
is clearly separated from the white world or the modern world. In Cocoas remarks she is illustrating that the "whole story" is
enormous and it involves many different elements, which include a sense of timelessness and a history of the people. These people, like George who is now gone, still live on,
whether in the history of a people, or in the subtle way all people have something they have left behind that is part of a grander story. Voices
