and goods to the point where it subsumes local cultures. This paper explores these ideas to see whether or not globalization and Americanization can be see as synonymous. Discussion First,
its clear that "Americanization" is not viewed as a good thing in general; its generally defined as a "process driven by American consumer culture that rolls over other cultures" (Rothenberg,
2003). Unfortunately, that "consumer culture" seems to represent the very worst parts of American life: McDonalds, rap music, violent films, too-sexy clothing, rampant consumerism and greed; these are the
types of things associated with Americanization, and they paint a very ugly picture of the American experience. Other things, such as free public education, a democracy that is still working
after 200 years, a free press, freedom of religion and the basic guarantees of dignity that come with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are much harder to export
(certainly trying to do it with guns is not the answer), nor do ideas and principles make the same profit as a case of Coca-Cola. It can be argued, then,
that the export of American culture is not always appreciated, or desired, but America is so powerful that it cannot be resisted. But is it globalization? Opinions vary. One person
who says that globalization and Americanization are the same discusses his experiences around the world. In Thailand, a young woman confesses to Pascal Zachary that one of the reasons shes
