in the business environment, but it is also very simplistic. Globalization has seen the expansion of trade and business into all areas of the world and is reflected in the
way that the worlds economic growth and trading has increased. Between 1950 and 1994 the output increased by more than five times, however the level of trading increased disproportionately with
14 times the amount to trade taking place in 1994 than in 1950 (Trade point, 2003). Therefore a characteristic may be seen as increased trade, but also a much greater
movement of goods. However, this is only one aspect of the way in which globalization may be defined and described. To look at the phenomena in more depth the
work of Scholte (2000) may be useful. Scholte looks at the way globalization takes place and argues that literature generally puts forward five key broad definitions of what is meant
by globalization. These are globalization as internationalization, as liberalization, as universalization, as westernization and as deterritorialization. These look to many of the different definitions of globalization and consider many of
the different aspects of globalization, not only the economic or business aspects, but also the social and political influences that may be interlinked or interdependent on each other. The
first of these is that of globalization as internationalization (Scholte, 2000). This perception is that globalization is simply an extension of international trade and interdependence. This is a broadly economic
perspective where there is increasing interdependence between national economies, and the processes are characterized with an increasing level of international processes and transactions (Scholte, 2000). This is rather limited view
