many changes throughout the world, including the spread of industrial development in the Third World, the creation of mass media and media-based marketing, and the integration of a consumer identity
based in the cultures of the United States, the United Kingdom and Western Europe. This study utilizes a qualitative methodology to assess the views in the current literature, and
provides a theoretical and practical view of the role of globalization in the modern consumer society. Chapter One: Introduction The concept of globalization was coined in the 20th
century as a basis for explaining the lasting impacts of industrial development and the expansion of modern business operations. Technological advancements, which improved production methods and reduced the need
for skilled labor, resulted in the seeking of a less costly labor base. As a result, many companies outsourced some of their production elements into foreign countries, including Third
World countries, resulting in an increasing influence of industrialized nations over the countries of the Third World. This is just one aspect, though, of the historical underpinnings of
globalization. Increasing technology has also resulted in an expansion of the influences of industrial countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the countries of the European Union,
through the influences of the mass media. The mass media and global development have influenced the direction of the modern consumer culture, placed emphasis on an increasing value for
