debated topics of contemporary times. Even the definition of globalization is sometimes debated. Foreign Policy (2001, pg 56), however, contends that "there seems to be a consensus that
globalization is defined by increasing levels of interdependence over vast distances". While precisely measuring the degree of that interdependence can be difficult if not impossible, it is rather easy
to look at it in general terms, in terms that broadly divide the world into rich and poor, technologically-developed and lesser developed. Pettis (2001), of course, suggests
that technology alone is not the most important factor in globalization but that the communication and transportation that are facilitated by technological development are. Never-the-less, there not only seems
to be a correlation between technological development and wealth but also an ever-widening gap between those that occupy the lowest economic echelons and those that occupy the highest. The thesis
can be presented, in fact, that: Despite predictions to the contrary, globalization does not seem
to have reduced the gap between the rich and poor. This thesis seems particularly
valid when we consider the fact that an estimated two billion people in the world today earn less than $2 per day (Scott, 2001). At the same time the
upper echelon in the world sometimes gauge their daily earnings in the thousands. Furthermore, while the per capita income for the poorest in the world showed no increase between
1970 and 1995 and only a 0.7 percent increase for the middle income segment, the income of the richest countries increased by 1.9 percent for this same time period (Scott,
