Globalization has affected our world in a way few other phenomena have. There have, in fact, been many positive benefits
of globalization. Globalization, however, is neither an entirely positive phenomena nor an entirely negative phenomena. It is a mixture of both. This is true of economics, it
is true of culture, it is true of the world environment and it is certainly true in terms of security. Indeed, all of the changes that been brought about
by globalization can impact human security to one degree or another. When any one aspect of our world is threatened, so are we. The intent of this
paper is to discuss both the benefits and the challenges that globalization presents for security. Globalization has been defined in a variety
of ways over time. Foreign Policy (56) points out, however, that "there seems to be a consensus that globalization is defined by increasing levels of interdependence over vast distances".
In 1990 another term was coined that closely related to the process of globalization. This term is "Washington Consensus" and is used specifically to describe world trade and
development. The term originally referred to the "lowest common denominator of policy advice being addressed by the Washington-based institutions to Latin American countries as of 1989" (Washington Consensus).
