word is used it is referring to the trade, which is the latter definition. However, it seems that the establishment of multinational corporations or even of import-export ventures would change
the culture of the society in one way or another. The word, globalization, spurs many diverse emotional reactions among people. The International Monetary Fund writes that the term "has
acquired considerable emotive force" Proponents believe it is a "key to future world economic development" (IMF Staff, 2000). Opponents believe it is the key to destruction and it will increase
the economic gap between countries (IMF Staff, 2000). Opponents also believe that globalization can negatively impact social progress (IMF Staff, 2000). Globalization is not new, particularly when we consider what
the concept really means. For example, in 1944, the Merriam Webster Dictionary included the verb globalize (Ferraro, 2006). It isnt even new to the modern world. Historical accounts of globalization
officially begin in 325 B.C. when Alexander the Great and Chandragupta Maurya negotiated an eastward overland route (Ferraro, 2006). Between 960 and 1279, trade expanded between Europe and China, something
that had been spurred by Genghis Khan in 1100 across Eurasia (Ferraro, 2006). The Ottoman Empire in the 1300s spanned "Europe, North Africa, and Middle East" (Ferraro, 2006). Ferraro (2006)
reported that by 1350, "networks of trade which involved frequent movements of people, animals, goods, money, . . . ran from England to China," crossing through France and Italy. Egypt,
