The very essence of globalization is that of change, to relearn stable and familiar ways in order to make room for ever-growing progress. Because there are two sides to every issue, the dichotomy of air travel and tourism growth compared with environmental degradation has rendered globalization a much-contested concept. been from an international perspective. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, international air passengers saw incredible growth between 1972 and 1994 going from eighty-eight million to three hundred
forty-four million during that time frame, making tourism responsible for over sixty percent of all air travel (UNEP, 2001). It is clear, therefore, how "many of the forces and
consequences of globalization will benefit tourism and the service sector" (Peric, no date) as much as - or more than - other worldwide industries.
The advancement of tourism from the vast increase of commercial aviation in the twentieth century has taken the industry by storm. Indeed, the fact that people are more
readily able to travel into otherwise limited or inaccessible places has re-established tourism as a strong and steady market, as well as availing previously unattainable adventures to the single-minded traveler.
