the future. The idea of globalization and modernization was born out of the capitalist market mentality in the age of technology. The designation of third world was promoted
as a means to distinguish those countries that had not joined the Western concept of success by increasing their GNP and opening their doors to the modern concept of fast
food merchandising for profit and gain rather than for health and prosperity. According to Holton (1998), rather than an intensification of economic, political, social and cultural relations across
borders, globalization is an intensification of the consciousness of the world -- one which permeates through both the local and global, the universal and the particular, the centre and the
periphery -- as a kind of `local globalization which he refers to as `glocalization. As such, globalization is not unitary, but is a set of various intersecting processes.
Glocalization does not necessitate the homogenous adoption of market practices as evinced by the failure of Kelloggs cereals in Japan and the introduction of Kosher food preparation in Israels McDonalds
outlets. Globalization and modernization have been decreed by the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the transnational corporations to mean privatization, increased
