Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages. In Thomas Berry's article "The Viable Human" we are shown that the 'wonderworld' we are striving for is in fact becoming a 'wasteworld.' Berry tells us "the total extinction of life is not imminent, though the elaborate forms of life expression in the earth's ecosystems may be shattered in an irreversible manner. What is absolutely threatened is the degradation of the planet's more brilliant and satisfying form of life expression" (Berry, 1998, 186). Bibliography lists 3 sources.

is absolutely threatened is the degradation of the planets more brilliant and satisfying form of life expression" (Berry, 1998, 186). Berrys article goes on to explain that it is a
"disturbed psychic structure of the human" (187) that is the cause of the present ecological imbalance of the world. Because of an emotional insensitivity man is not taking proper
care of the natural world, and while this natural world has been severely damaged, it can be corrected in most cases. In other words, the consumer/industrial attitude is not
compatible with environmental ethics. For without some type of healing of our natural world, the "viability of the human is severely limited (Berry, 1998, 187). Another issue directly related
to the manufacturing of less polluting automobiles is the fact that while the vehicles, themselves, may have emitted significantly less air pollution, the companies that manufactured them were making up
the difference -- and them some -- by building taller smoke stacks. The idea behind this concept was to encourage the manufacturing pollutants to travel long distances, far away
from the origination site. But what was not realized was that there is no away when it comes to getting rid of air pollution. What happened was that
all of the expelled pollution traveled to areas where there were no existing pollution problems and ultimately created one. As Berry points out to the reader, as the world continues
to succumb to the effects of global warming, some areas of the planet have been discovered to be significantly more susceptible to the detrimental affects than others. For the
