to comprehend the significance of the phenomenon. It should be noted that prior to the industrial revolution, the atmosphere of the Earth was comprised of carbon dioxide at a rate
of 280 parts per million (McKibben, 2007). That is what human beings were used to experiencing and was thought to be a good amount (McKibben, 2007). That was equated with
a global temperature of approximately 57 degrees Fahrenheit, and that set the "psychological calendar" of Earths inhabitants (McKibben, 2007). In other words, the people would get used to a certain
temperature. Today, the problem is that the temperature is higher than it has ever been and this can cause problems for human beings, plants and animal life. Siegel (2007)
explains that global warming is something that will accentuate the extremes of climate. He notes that the warming has already demonstrated a length of the growing season (Siegel, 2007). One
might think that is good, as more fruits and vegetables could potentially be grown, but that is not the case. Siegel (2007) goes on to explain that the "warming is
likely to bring excessive rain to some regions and drought to others" (p.61). There is also the likelihood that majority cyclonic storms will increase with intensity (Siegel, 2007). Fearnside
(2007) expands on that notion and writes: "In 2005 Amazonia was hit by a very severe drought that was not caused by El Ni?o, but was related to global
warming. While El Ni?o is triggered by warm water in the Pacific, in 2005 the drought was the result of a patch of warm water in the Atlantic- the same
one that gave rise to hurricane Katrina" (p. A11). Also, one study suggests that half of increased temperatures in the Atlantic are definitely due to global warming and if
