specifically the burning of fossil fuels such as coals, oils, and natural gas has resulted in carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbon emissions that have accumulated in the atmosphere
over time and that have negatively impacted the stratospheric ozone shield. These gases absorb heat. The result is that heat can no longer escape from our atmosphere as
effectively as it once did. This couples with clear cutting that removes trees that actually serve to decrease atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. The result is the progressive global
climate change that we refer to as global warming. Global warming has numerous potential effects. Four of these potential effects are 1. seasonal changes, 2. agricultural
changes, 3. hydroperiod changes, and 4. increased resourced devoted to calculating the potential effects of global warming.
Seasonal Changes Data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that the earths average surface temperature
since the mid-1800s was at its highest levels in 1998, 2002, and 2003. NOAA has speculated that these temperatures are, in fact, the highest of the last millennium.
It is important to note, however, that no actual temperature data exist prior to the mid nineteenth century so speculations such as this are based on evidence such as that
found in tree ring growth and sediments from lakes and ocean bottoms. This type of evidence becomes stronger when we combine it with the actual temperature data that exists
and with the observed seasonal changes that have manifested in the Northern Hemisphere in particular. Spring is coming approximately six days earlier and autumn five days later in this
