detailed examination of Adlers article, which draws on substantiating sources, shows it to be not only accurate and concise, but also sufficiently comprehensive to offer a good overview of this
issue to Newsweek readers. Adler begins by referring to the criticism that descended on Harvard oceanographer James McCarthy because he predicted that the worst case outcomes predicted by experts
will never occur not because he feels that they are inaccurate, but rather because he feels that as a society "we cant be that stupid" to know what will happen
and not take steps to prevent it (Adler, 2007, p. 45). This leads into Adlers discussion of several of the most recent events in this national debate: the recent Supreme
Court ruling that the federal government has the power under the Clean Air Act to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles and the response of the Bush administration that
they have "no intention of doing anything of the sort" (Adler, 2007, p. 45). Another important milestone that Adler describes is the recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC), which analyzes the research of nearly a thousand scientists form 74 countries in order to assess the validity of the global warming concept. This assessment concludes that
global warming is already affecting the worlds ecology and the climatic change associated with global warming could lead to "more severe and widespread drought," as well as flooding along coasts
