much argumentation amongst experts in the field. Comedians like George Carlin joke about the possibility that people are actually affecting a planet that is billions of years old, suggesting that
human activity has little effect on the environment. Still, few will dispute the actual changes which have arisen thus far. In Antarctica for example, the impact of this phenomenon is
found most prominently in northern areas of the continent ("Global Warming: Early Warning Signs," 2007). Ice shelves that are found north have actually collapsed ("Global Warming: Early Warning Signs," 2007).
What scientists are most concerned with now is the large ice sheet found in the West Antarctic as that collapse would raise the sea level nineteen feet ("Global Warming: Early
Warning Signs," 2007). Global warming has an effect on the ecosystem. Al Gore (2000) writes: "When the Aral Sea dries up and its fish all die, for example, it
is as if this fragile ecosystem is gradually being crumpled by the force of civilization crashing into it" (p.42). Others claim that while it seems as if global warming would
have a significant impact on the ecosystem, most species would find coping mechanisms, move inland and so forth ("Global Warmings Uncertainties," 1995). Of course, the change that will occur as
a result of increasing temperatures is not in dispute. If temperatures continue to rise, it will effect the ecosystem to some degree. Many are familiar with the term "Greenhouse effect."
The warming effect as a result of greenhouse gases is a phenomenon that was first noted by a French scientist in 1827 (Houghton, 1997). What is the greenhouse effect exactly?
Greenhouse gases are actually gases which are trapped in the atmosphere ("Climate Change," 2006). Some greenhouse gases are a result of human activity and some occur naturally in the atmosphere
